Cyprus’ largest and most comprehensive calisthenics park was recently installed on Larnaka city’s Kastella Beach in a joint project between Larnaka Municipality and Larnaka Tourism Board (LTB).
The beach fitness apparatus – comprised exclusively of calisthenics equipment – is designed to be used by both children and adults with the parallel aim of holding athletic events and competitions.
The creation of the park falls under LTB’s Annual Action Plan that is under the purview of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and contributes to Larnaka city’s enrichment plans, already attracting both locals and visitors alike.
The equipment is latest-spec and manufactured in accordance with European Quality and Safety Regulations. It includes pull-up bars, parallel bars, ladders, benches, rings and other apparatus of varying heights. In addition to covering the requirements of adults, equipment suitable for children has also been installed.
Calisthenics is an increasingly popular way of training that is fast gaining fans internationally. It is based on the training system used by the ancient Greeks to prepare their body and spirit for battle, to take part in competitions, or simply to maintain good health and physical condition. The name of the sport comes from the ancient Greek words ‘kallos’ (meaning beauty) and “sthenos” (meaning vigor; both mental and physical).
In preparing the proposal, the expertise and know-how of professionals with experience in creating similar spaces and parks abroad was utilised. Kastella Beach was chosen as the ideal location; easily accessible, connected to the public transport network and cycle paths, offering ample parking and access to sanitary facilities, whilst also in an area with a large number of tourist accommodation options and new residential units.
